Aafia Siddiqui
Aafia Siddiqui Trial: Inconsistent Statements, No Physical Evidence
An interesting article by Ibrahim Sajid Malick about the witness testimonies’ contradictions in the Aafia Siddiqui Trial.

Aafia case judge orders replacement of two jurors
Tears and tissues — the scarred US Army Chief Warrant Officer. Crying over your pain? What of the pain that you have inflicted on innocents? Heroes to the US, Support the Troops — Murderers and War Criminals to the rest of the world.

Dr Aafia has repeatedly said that she did not have any faith in her defence team and had not established any rapport with any member of the team.

Though she was calm for most of the day, in two outbursts she said that it was in fact Captain Snyder who had shot her and not the chief warrant officer as told by the prosecution and their witnesses.

A US army soldier, whose identity was limited to his rank — chief warrant officer — limped into the courtroom with a cane and a chestful of medals. He wept when he described the wounds he had sustained in an unrelated roadside bombing in September in Afghanistan

“Three of my men were killed, along with one Afghan,” he said.

The soldier began crying, and judge Berman reached over and handed him a tissue.

“Sorry,” the witness said, dabbing at his badly scarred face and milky eyes. “I was burned over most of my body,” he said. “I’ve had several skin grafts, lost a couple of organs. Every bone — waist down to my feet — was broken.”

As he spoke, Dr Aafia said: “I feel sorry for you. Don’t do that. It will make America look bad.” US marshals removed her following her remark.

He said that the version would be made available at the IICT’s website: iict.usindh.edu.pk, and added that the institute had approached the management of Google to make the Sindhi version available on its website.

‘Suicide vest’ wins youth the jackpot

LAYYAH, Jan 26: A youth took away Rs5 million from a bank branch after posing himself as a ‘suicide bomber’ while showing to the officials a detonator and wires wrapped around him.

“I would blow myself in a jiffy if you refuse the amount,” officials quoted him as saying.

Sex trade victims find no support
The Punjab Police and Government need to stop these heinous sex slavers operating in the Data Darbar.

KASUR, Jan 26: The local Darul Aman, or shelter, has been home to two reclusive girls, who appear to be in their early 20s, for the last two weeks. These girls along with four others were rescued from a brothel in Pattoki by police on Jan 10.

Police raided the brothel after a letter from a girl (R), of Faisalabad, alerted district police officer Gauhar Nafees about the bordello in neighborhood Sharifpura in Pattoki and found six girls in sex slavery there. Of the six, four have been handed over to their families while two girls are awaiting reunion with their families.

One of them is 18-year-old (A), of a town near Rawalpindi, while the other (S) is from Shikarpur. Dawn visited the shelter about a week ago and met the sex trade victims. Their stories are full of horrors and shocking revelations.

She says in the beginning she resisted the flesh trade, but frequent torture and starvation forced her to accept the new realities of life. She said the procurer would detain her in a room of the knocking shop for the whole day and would take her out at night only to entertain the visitors. She said it was very difficult to flee the brothel as the shopkeepers in red light district would keep an eye on every woman.

The victim says a gang of women at Data Sahib keeps an eye on the girls who come alone at the shrine. The gang offers them some sedative or drinks spiked with intoxicants. When the girl regains senses, she finds herself chained in a dungeon.

PAKISTAN: Aid workers bracing for possible new IDP influx
The fruits of American War on Terror. Do more, do more … Rubbish

ISLAMABAD, 26 January 2010 (IRIN) – Aid agencies are preparing for an influx of a possible further 150,000 internally displaced persons (IDPs) in northwestern Pakistan in 2010, according to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) and other agencies.

“Around 1.1 million individuals are still displaced. Around 113,500 of these are still living in camps and 97,000 are at Jalozai [in Nowshera],” Billi Bierling, OCHA public information officer, told IRIN.

“Our home was badly damaged. It can be repaired but I spent all our savings on supporting my family after we left home in June last year and have none left over to re-build,” said Azamullah Jan, from Swat, who is still based at the Jalala Camp in Mardan.

“Times are constantly getting harder for us as there is less and less help from the government or international agencies,” he said, describing winter at the camp as “especially bleak” because “the tents offer no protection against the cold and it is freezing at night.”
